SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL HEROES

We decided to interview some skateshop, to know their point of view and how they are reacting to Covid-19 lockdown.

Skateboarding's Finest - Torino

- Hi, introduce yourself and your shop.
Hi, I’m Marco Olent from Turin’s Skateboarding’s Finest. The shop opened in 2005 but I’ve inherited it from its old owner in 2015.

- How did you react to the news of lockdown?
Seeing how it was turning out, I decided to close the shop two days before the official lockdown. I believed it would last a couple weeks, so I wanted to put that time to good use for the shop and decided to repaint it. My predictions about the lockdown were obviously wrong.

What measures did you take to keep your shop going?
In the first two weeks I focused on shop works. Between clearing up, disassembling, getting all set, repainting and putting all back in, it took more time then expected. After I finished and realized that this situation will be going on for a long time, I launched some instagram offers trying to sell last season’s items and new stuff. The numbers are not even comparable to those we make when the shop is open though.

- What do you foresee after reopening (rough date on May 18th)?
I predict a tough situation on the business side. Not to be negative, but it’s clear that this scenario harmed all workers, be them employees or entrepreneurs. Everybody took losses, so the buying power will sharply decrease and this will affect all of us.

- What did you learn from this experience, professionally and in general?
I prefer giving my thought on the current and future situations. This kind of situations make us realize how delicate and fragile our system is. And although everybody seeks their own personal fulfillment, we’re all part of a community. For this reason we should think that every action we make falls into a bigger scheme. We shouldn’t act as model citizens only when the government tells us to stay home or by doing a good job observing the rules, but by making the right choices everyday. Speaking of skateshops and retail, [deciding] where to buy (or better “from who”) and what. In simple words, get off the internet and buy local. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, let’s try where your friend lives... if money keeps flowing into the pockets of the few big ones we’re fucked!

Rufus - Milano

Thank you for skating!

- Hi, introduce yourself and your shop.
We’re Richi and Sere, founders of Rufus Macba (started in 2009 in Barcellona) and since last year we’ve opened a new shop, Rufus Milano.

- How did you react to the news of lockdown?
Honestly we didn’t get too alarmed in the beginning because we saw it as a problem that would last a couple weeks, but then seeing the news and our lives starting to change we took it more seriously! We’re a family business, so having to stay closed for two months hurt us! Even more if we consider we have both our shops in countries where government aid has been null.

What measures did you take to keep your shop going?
Luckily we launched our online shop in 2016 and frankly it has been our anchor! Of course we had to create promos to try and keep up with sales during this crisis! Clients and friends showed us great support and we’re very happy and satisfied with what we’ve done! We also thank brands like Vans, Nike SB and Converse Cons which created projects to help small shops like ours!

- What do you foresee after reopening (rough date on May 18th)?
We believe it will be very hard to recover in the beginning. It will be like starting from scratch one more time. But we also believe that after two months spent inside their homes, skaters will be more hyped than ever to get back to normality, and we will be there 100%.

- What did you learn from this experience, professionally and in general?
Never stop reinventing yourself and being positive! There’s a solution to everything, all it takes is believing in what you do! Thank you for skating!

Dear George, - Verona

Abbiamo aperto a settembre 2019 in centro a Verona.

- Hi, introduce yourself and your shop.
Dear George, is a physical and online shop, other than a brand.  We opened in September 2019 in Verona’s city center. The idea sparked from Riccardo, Giovanni and Francesco, lifelong skaters, later joined by Laura and Martina.

- How did you react to the news of lockdown?
Here in Verona we got the first clues during February. No more tourism, the first masks [appeared], we initially thought it to be an excessive reaction. When we realized how serious the problem was and lockdown was enforced, even if it was a hard hit, it seemed to us the only way to grant everybody’s safety and stop the virus from further spreading.

What measures did you take to keep your shop going?
We acted on two fronts. The first more tactic, doing a cashback promo for online shopping; the other by giving value to the product. Clients could get in touch with us through video calling, so that we could show them our products straight from the shop.  We set up free home delivery for clients in town, and free shipping to the rest of Italy.

- What do you foresee after reopening (rough date on May 18th)?
We will all have to be more careful, first and foremost to guarantee the clients’ as well as our safety. So masks, regulated entrances, sanitation. Considering the hype to skate after lockdown and summer approaching, we think that hardware sales will recover fast while clothing will struggle. But it’s up to us to be creative, not give up and look for innovative solutions.

- What did you learn from this experience, professionally and in general?
We realized how important it is, now more than ever, to support local and independent businesses, in and out of skateboarding. Small shops must back each other within their own cities and beyond. We must create value for our communities, recognize who does the same, work together and be united.

A tal proposito: grazie a tutti !!!!
We love Eightball Family.

- Hi, introduce yourself and your shop.
Hi, I’m Alessandra from Eightball skateshop in Bassano del Grappa. Eightball opened on February 28th 1999, focusing on street and board sport cultures. During these 21 years we kept traveling and researching, always moved by curiosity, and got to interact professionally and personally with different businesses. We tried to sustain our local skate scene by creating a team/family and supporting skateboard related initiatives thanks to our passion and help from our sponsors.

- How did you react to the news of lockdown?
We closed a couple days before the official lockdown. Feelings of disbelief, insecurity and not knowing well what was happening made us sadly decide to do so, for the safety of our workers. It goes without saying that turning off the lights not knowing an official reopening date was a hard it, caused by lack of perspective, support and information.

What measures did you take to keep your shop going?
We tried to keep our skateshop’s communication and vitality going, at least virtually. We’ve kept in touch with our community through social networks thanks to our amazing working dreamteam. We tried to show our small shop experience trough photos and videos, to continue interacting with our friends and family. After ten days (and lacking an online shop) we started a free delivery service, which was very appreciated. Speaking of it: thanks to all of you! WE LOVE EIGHTBALL FAMILY

- What do you foresee after reopening (rough date on May 18th)?
Sincerely I don’t know, we’re trying to understand how it will be to live in the shop with social distancing and Covid-19 security protocols. It’s strange to think we will be unable to physically interact with people coming in, be it to buy, have a chat or a beer at the end of the day. I believe this to be valid for every small business who has personal relations with their clients. It will surely be a challenge, just like other we faced in the past. We will react doing our best: smiling with our eyes over the masks, trying to spark curiosity and satisfying our clients.

- What did you learn from this experience, professionally and in general?
We understood better than ever that nothing is to be taken for granted and we’re terribly fragile. We’ve learned that nobody saves themselves alone from coronavirus and it’s better to think responsibly. We’re been asked to act responsibly. Covid-19 is forcing us to think about the consequences of what we do, to pay attention to small things, hoping we’ll get more careful in the future because we will know that our actions carry consequences on our environment. It’s the win-win logic: if somebody loses, we’ll all lose; if we’ll win, we would do so only together! I feel very lucky to have such a nice family and working team to share this moment with. I would like to deeply thank all those who keep believing in us.

7Hills Store - Roma

- Hi, introduce yourself and your shop.
Hi everyone, I’m Ale Bellante and I’m the owner of 7Hills, which started in 2012 as a skate distribution. Then in 2015 I decided to open 7Hills Skateshop in Rome, to give more support to our locals.

- How did you react to the news of lockdown?
Not well of course. But I reacted swiftly, seeing it as the right moment to update and upgrade ourselves. In fact, once we’ll be open again, we will have a new sales and customer care service, in addiction to a restyled online shop.

What measures did you take to keep your shop going?
We intensified our online presence, trying our best to keep in touch with our clients and supporters trough social media communication. A skateshop is a hub for the city, like a big family for skaters. So we tried to get our scene involved and feel less lonely together.

- What do you foresee after reopening (rough date on May 18th)?
At first I think we’ll suffer from a lacking of the poetry a skateshop enshrines. In the beginning  we’ll miss the warmth of local skaters, lifelong friends, out of town students, neighbors and tourists that had become part of our everyday life. After this experience we’re aware we’ll have to wait to feel this warmth again. But we’re certain that everything will come back sooner or later. At the same time we know that today’s means of communication can help us transmit our passion and get closer to our audience.

- What did you learn from this experience, professionally and in general?
I’ll be honest, I think I’ve learned nothing new. I’ll rather say I refined what I knew already. We carried on our usual approach during this experience: we’ve stayed in touch with our suppliers, close to our customers and we’ve given out the means for everybody to reach out to us. In general, I can tell you I took advantage of all this time to improve our offer even more.

Benihana Skateshop - Ortona

- Hi, introduce yourself and your shop.
Hi everybody I’m Davide from Benihana (Benihanal fro friends), I’m from Ortona a Mare (20km from Pescara and birthplace of Rocco Siffredi) and I’ve started my activity of accumulating debts and opened Benihana Skateshop in 2004 to repair for the economic damages caused by local shops (they were charging too much) and offer the best quality for the smallest price, knowing that skaters, such as my Badasscoast family, are broke as shit.

- How did you react to the news of lockdown?
When they announced the lockdown I freaked out, keeping up with the many decrees ruled by the government every 15 days, even if we live in a region which has not been particularly hit by Covid-19.

What measures did you take to keep your shop going?
I immediately put myself to work setting up a nation-wide shipping service, thank god many friends supported from all over… then I opened an online bigcartel shop that you can visit on benihanaskateshop.bigcartel.com

- What do you foresee after reopening (rough date on May 18th)?
I predict I’ll start paying some debts back (just kidding). Anyway we will need to pay attention to the new safety rules inside the skateshop. I’m sorry I will not be able to have the usual crowd keeping me company and showing support, giving the shop a soul. And of course I predict we will be back skating like old times, with policemen harassing us just because of skateboarding.

- What did you learn from this experience, professionally and in general?
That I should’ve minded my own business in 2004 haha. But seriously, it can only make me grow up, I should judge my next moves more carefully and I will not take anything for granted anymore.
